Why did FARC start?
So why did FARC start? The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia or FARC started in the early days growing out of the turmoil and fighting in the 1950s between liberal and conservative militias. FARC was established in 1964 by the Colombian Communist Party to defend what were then autonomous Communist-controlled rural areas. It is organized along military lines and includes several units that operate mostly in key urban areas such as Bogota.
Besides the bombings, murder, mortar attacks, narcotrafficking, kidnapping, extortion and hijacking, FARC has many supporters. Most of their supporters come from the rural areas of Columbia. They do receive help occasionally from Cuba.
